Pasadena Button Cowl
Pasadena is famous for their colorful parade in the New Year. The beautiful roses – pinks and yellows – in varying shades of this cowl remind me of that time of year. Made in a simple two row repeat even a beginning crocheter can make this scarf quickly. Adding fun buttons make this stylish cowl a treat to wear.
Back in the middle of the summer, I was contacted by the Yarnover Truck asking if I would design the first pattern of their 2017 Yarn Club in Crochet. When I heard that the yarn was going to be specially dyed in the Space Cadet’s Capella yarn in a Yarn Club only colorway called Pasadena – a wonderfully evocative blend of reds, pinks and yellows – I knew I had to do this.
You see, I am a New Year’s Baby. In fact I was born at 12:00:25 AM on January 1, 1967. I was dubbed Miss East Bay 1967. (I was born in Hayward, California) Granted it is just an honorary title – but, hey, sometimes you have to flaunt it! 😉
Being a New Year’s baby isn’t always easy. The fun part of it was that I shared my birthday with my Dad’s sister – my Lala Marie – and the Tournament of Roses Parade. (in my Italian heritage, “lala” is the Genovese dialect for aunt, which is my dad’s side of the family) But the not so fun thing, at least when I was a child, is that I shared my birthday with the Rose Bowl.
Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE FOOTBALL! But as a child I had to deal with my entire family putting the cake and presents on hold – after a large Italian meal – to watch the Rose Bowl. One year, to show my displeasure, I actually snuck up behind the TV console and unplugged it. I don’t remember the year or who was playing – but I remember how upset my dad was! Needless to say, I never messed with football in our house again.
Back to the pattern!
The key to this project for the Yarnover Truck was that it needed to be one-skein and needed to incorporate four 1.5-inch buttons from Jennie the Potter. Once the yarn arrived, and I got to ooh and awe over the colors and play with it, The Pasadena Button Cowl was born!
Here are the details:
7 inches wide by 32 inches long
195 yards worsted weight yarn
Model uses Space Cadet Capella (100% Superwash Merino Wool; 3.5 oz /100g = 195 yds / 178m) in color Pasadena
US size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook or size needed for gauge.
4- 1 ½ inch buttons
In pattern 4 repeats and 8 rows = 4 inches (blocked)
The pattern includes a fun split leg double crochet two together that actually crosses over three other doubles to give a puffy cluster feel. I love that it makes a holes that are perfect for button holes! You can button up the cowl anyway you want.
I know that you cannot get this particular colorway if you weren’t a part of the Yarn club, but Capella comes in many colors that would look just as great. Take a look at Tantrum or Molten Cool!
